THE BLUE RHYTHM BOYS Tom Mitchell, Jim Stephanson, John Previti and Vince McCool make up the core of The Blue Rhythm Boys but they have been joined on stage and record with some great players including Ralph Gordon (upright bass), Mark Schatz (upright bass), Kevin Wimmer (violin), Brooks Tegler (drums), Phil Wiggins (harmonica) and Dave Giegerich (dobro). In 2010 they released their
third CD “Come on If You’re Comin”. In their musical lives, these guys have played in just about every state in the union and many countries around the world, but they have all claimed that their favorite gigs are when they can play together.
From 1993 –2002 Tom Mitchell
toured with the legendary recording artist Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks across the United States and around the world. He
played guitar on "Beatin' The Heat", the acclaimed CD release
by Dan Hicks featuring guest appearances from Bette Midler,
Ricki Lee Jones, Tom Waits, Elvis
Costello and Brian Setzer. "TIME"
magazine named it one of "Top 10 CD's of the Year" and
"Rolling Stone" gave it 3 1/2 stars. Tom also played on
“Alive and Lickin” a live recording of the Hot Licks from
The Iron Horse in North Hampton Mass. In addition to the Blue
Rhythm Boys, Tom can be heard with Ann Savoy & Her Sleepless Knights with
whom he has made two critically acclaimed recordings on Memphis International Records:
“If
Dreams Come True” and the 2010 release
“Black Coffee”. This
collaboration led to a movie Soundtrack spot and producer credits for Tom when
they recorded Ann Savoy’s song “O
Comm’e Les Nuit” for the Sony
picture “All the Kings Men”.
Jim Stephanson’s unique guitar style draws on the influences of Chet Atkins, Danny Gatton, Les Paul and Mississippi John Hurt. "The Washington Post" says: "Washington DC can lay claim to a heritage of great electric guitar players; Jim Stephanson is part of that legacy." In 2010 Jim released his first solo album of original roots rock music entitled "Say Go". NRBQ fans take note: Say Go was co-produced by Terry Adams who also plays piano, clavinet, and organ. The rhythm section on the entire disc is the incomparable team of Tom Ardolino and Joey Spampinato (who also contributes harmony vocals). You can catch Jim playing with Chick Hall Jr. in the Country Swing Quartet, Hillbilly Jazz. The dynamic twin guitar arrangements pay homage to guitar legends Hank Garland, Jimmy Bryant, Roy Lanham, George Barnes, and Les Paul. Last but not least Jim’s reputation has landed him work supporting a variety of artists; including, Big Joe and the Dynaflows, Chris Gaffney, The J Street Jumpers (The Uptown Rhythm Kings), The Brooks Tegler Big Band, Billy Hancock, Steve Wolf and SwingSpeak, Eric Brace and Last Train Home, Karl Straub, Dave Kitchen and many others.
